Tributes from the Fans
Mr Andrew Jarvis |
Throughout the history of CFC, there have always been players who have suumed up the spirit of the club - Dave Blakey, Albert Holmes - players who would run through brick walls for the club. Steve is in that category - a man whose obvious honesty and integrity shine through. That is epitomised for me by his behaviour at away games. I live in London so only manage to see the team at Orient, Brentford etc. At the end of the match it was always Steve who made a real effort to come down to the Away end to say thank you. Brilliant - and you could see he meant it. Thank you for that - a gesture which was noticeably lacking last season without his leadership. So thank you Steve - you are a Chesterfield Hero - and you will always be one of my all-time greats of Saltergate.

You are one of the all time greats and are already being sorely missed. My memories
are of your 'barnstorming'runs from the back under Nicky Law,your fully deserved
Man of the Match awards (there was a time when you seemed to win it every week),
your never-say-die attitude and your weekly acknowledgement of the fans at the end
of the game irrespective of the result. I wish you all the best for the future wherever
that may be. From the reception you got prior to the West Ham game, I'm sure you
know that you will always have a special place in the hearts of all true Spireites.
All the best.

Hi Blathers,
Just wanted to wish you all the best for the future. You will be sorely missed mate. My favourite player of all times & I shed a few tears when you had to retire. It's a
long time since I saw a player with so much passion for the club as you. You were what Chesterfield Football Club is all about - strength, passion, pride. 110% every
game & although you used to play for a crap 'not famous any more' club, I still
believe that you would bleed blue & white. The fact that you took a pay cut during
the DB era amazes me, I can't imagine many players during that no matter how much
they loved their club, and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Miss you tons mate. You were one of the great ones & you can never be replaced.
Sir Steve Blatherwick, I salute you! Always keep smiling. Adele Hall X

Dave Wager |
Blathers, you are a top man and were always outstanding throughout your time at
Saltergate. The club has still not (& in my humble opinion never will)find a suitable
replacement for you. How do you replace a legend who falls into the same mould as
the other loyal Spireite icon, Dave Blakey. All the very best for whatever direction you
chose for your future career.
Dave Wager (Newarkblue)

what a waste of talent when you had to "retire" you say you would like to stay in the game in some way what about becoming the next manager of the spireites we need some one like you with all your fire and passion.
Best Regards Steve

Legend’ is the word. You are sorely, sorely missed (not least when defending in-swinging corners).
You say “most of all I miss heading the ball! Yes strange, I know, but that feeling of jumping and beating my opponent to “bosh” the ball is something I really miss” – I certainly miss seeing a trademark header slap off your forehead. I also miss those forward runs of yours, not to mention the occasional ‘discussion’ with a fellow centre half – you and Evo always enjoyed a chat after a defensive mix-up.
I sincerely wish you all the best for the future, after your years of loyalty, hard work and determination.

Craig Heeley |
Blathers,
Just thought I would send you a message to say thanks for all your efforts as a Spireites
player over the years. It was such a shame you had to retire prematurely and I feel
that we wouldn't be in the mess we are now if you'd still have been there commanding
the back four! One of my best memories was the header you scored in the 3-3 draw at Cardiff when
we were on our way to promotion in Division Three - it was one of the most intimidating
atmospheres I've ever experienced as a fan, and that goal will always stick in my head
as it silenced the majority at Ninian Park! In mine and many other Spireites' eyes you are a true Chesterfield F.C. legend, and I
hope Saltergate is packed to capacity when we play Forest at your tribute game.
Thanks for the memories Blathers,
Craig Heeley

Alright Blathers, just look at the state of things here without you, How's about getting in touch with Mr Hubbard about coaching our current back 4. Downsy tries but he aint ever gonna be a patch on you.
Good luck for the future and hope to see you back at Saltergate (whittington) very soon.
We the fans will hopefully be able to repay a little of our debt to you come testamonial week.
Cheers Big man

Steve Lee |
I would be grateful if you would pass on my best wishes to Steve Blatherwick following the sad news of his retirement. For the past eight years his professionalism, determination, dominance and sheer presence at the heart of the defence has made him my all-time favourite player at our Club and one who will be sorely missed. I am sure we will all miss his excellent heading ability (defence and attack) and those crunching 150% tackles which always won a cheer from the Kop. His enthusiasm and commitment could never be questioned right to the final whistle, and I sincerely hope we can replace him with a similar character and personality who will die for the cause.
Very best wishes to Steve and his family for a healthy, happy and successful future in whatever path he takes and thank you to him for the last eight years.
Yours Sincerely,
Steve Lee – Preston Spireite.

I wish you all the best in your future Steve, many people use the word legend, upon looking it up in the dictionary I see it says an unauthorised story a myth, something that possibly didn,t exist ?
then I found collossus, a gigantic person, much bigger than lifesize, an imperial power personified.
Much more befitting Steve Blatherwick! as a footballer.
Then again, I prefer gentleman, gave as good as he got and always gave 200% Good luck

Lord Blathers, I must confess that news of your enforced retirement was a sad day for me.. Its no coincidence the team has struggled without your presence. You were immense during our promotion winning season, despite all the troubles, and I was worried you would jump ship like many did. Your commitment to our club and your 110% performances week in, week out make you the Spireite legend that you are... My guess is your still drinking cans of Worthingtons from all those Man of the Match performances! (One having come on as a sub for 20 minutes home to Wigan!)
Been as pleasure to watch Lord Blathers of Saltergate over the years.... and a pleasure to sponsor your boots!
All the best for the future,
Simon Haywood (aka Marlons Curtains) |
