Thank you for visiting my Testimonial website and especially thanks to all of you who have sent  messages of good will and kindness since I was forced to quit. Leaving the game has been much tougher than I expected but I have nothing but fantastic memories, it’s been a great time at Chesterfield Football Club, just under nine years and I’ve really enjoyed myself.
My best memory? The promotion season in 2000-01, although it was thwarted a bit by the off the pitch goings on at the time, but in a strange way that made it even more of an achievement and rewarding. We were just a bunch of footballers and all of a sudden we were in this spotlight of suspicion and dodgy dealing, we were like rabbits in headlights. Its funny now but it wasn’t then! We had a great team that year and we really stuck together, I have some fantastic memories of that season. In close second was the survival battle of 2003/04 when Hursty scored in the dying seconds at home against Luton to survive relegation. That day was magic.
Funnily enough I can’t remember many of my goals too clearly, but I do remember a goal at Sheffield Wednesday, that was fantastic but I like to say that I set up a lot more than I scored; flicking a few on from set pieces, corners and long throws!

As for my most memorable match, I remember another game at Hillsborough when I really seemed to be in the zone,  that stuck out, I seemed to play really well that day and there was a year that my back was fine and I got some real consistency in.

My biggest regret at Saltergate was not doing better in the Cup. The FA Cup Semi Final run came a bit before I arrived and last season’s Carling Cup exploits came as I was calling it a day.

I’ve never liked change, I’ve always wanted to be accepted and I’m accepted here, so for me to have moved on maybe five or six years ago may have been something I could have done but I’m glad I didn’t. My heart is very much with the club and I really hope that Rico and the lads manage to get automatic promotion this season and that we can move into the new stadium on a high.

Thank you to everyone who has shown me their friendship and support which helped me to make my mark and feel so at home at Chesterfield Football Club.

All the Best

Steve Blatherwick
